Episode 12 - Crooked House (Part 2)

You'll never think your family is weird ever again.

What's that lurking around the corner? It's a new episode of The Misfit Book Club! We're super excited about today's episode because we're chatting with Audrey and Emily from The Year of Agatha! They're basically Agatha Christie experts, so prepare to learn a lot...and laugh even more!

We kick off our discussion with some tidbits about Audrey and Emily's Year of Agatha project [8:15] and learn some more about the Queen of Mystery herself before jumping into discussing Crooked House [20:15]. We talk all about the killer, their motives, and even chat about the movie adaptation of Crooked House! (It was written by Julian Fellowes, who also wrote Downton Abbey.)

We close out the episode with your fellow Misfits' opinions about the book [55:30] and your recommendations for other fictional detectives to check out [58:00].

Oh, and make sure you stick around until the end when we announce February's pick [60:00]. Hint: Maria is super excited.

Episode 10 - Turtles All the Way Down (Part 2)

It's a metaphor.

Happy Holidays, Misfits! We're here with a special gift for you—a brand spankin' new episode! We're digging into Turtles All the Way Down by John Green...you know, that book that's totally not popular right now AT ALL. We think you're going to love this episode whether you've started TATWD or not, but be forewarned: there are spoilers ahead!

So here's how it all goes down: we start with part two of our First Annual Holiday Gift Guide [7:15] before giving you our general thoughts on the book [13:15]. We talk about Daisy and Aza's friendship [20:00] before asking each other WTF is up with all hush money [24:30]! Then we move onto the real point of this book—Aza's struggle with anxiety and OCD [31:45]. That's when things get real, you guys. While we don't get too specific, we do want to put a trigger warning on this part.

On a serious note: if you're struggling with mental health issues, you are not alone. There are many free services that can help [48:45]. Your now is not your forever.

Finally, we wrap things up with a fun discussion of Star Wars [40:00] before announcing January's book pick [54:00] and our upcoming special guests. Oh! And there will be more freebies in your future...so be sure to stick around until the very end!

Episode 9 - Turtles All The Way Down (Part 1)

What happens when you can't control your own thoughts?

I don't know if you feel the same way we do, but we can't wait for 2017 to be over. But that doesn't mean we can't wrap things up with a great read! That's why we picked John Green's Turtles All the Way Down for December!

I mean, honestly. How do you not choose the new John Green book? And if you're anything like us, you're super excited to dig in.

First, join us for our awkward Thanksgiving stories [3:45] and our First Annual Holiday Gift Giving Guide! What do you get for that tough person on your holiday list? Don't worry—we've got you covered [7:45]. (Some of these book recommendations are a little passive-aggressive. But hey...why give a gift if you can't send a message, right?)

Then we're off to the spoiler-free races. We give you the skinny on John Green [13:00] and Turtles All the Way Down [19:45] and tackle some hard questions along the way. Should the author's life matter when we're trying to figure out the meaning of a book [23:00]? Why is it important to see good representations of mental illness in literature [26:00]? But don't worry—there are plenty of laughs sprinkled in there, too.

And make sure you stick around until the end...we have a big surprise annoucement! (Hint: it involves free things.) You definitely don't want to miss it.

Episode 8 - Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud (Part 2)

The best women are unruly ones.

Never fear! We've got a new episode of The Misfit Book Club to help you get through your Thanksgiving holiday. (But, like...don't listen to this one without headphones. Things get a little saucy right off the bat and stay that way. You know you like it.)

This is the discussion episode for Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman by Anne Helen Petersen. We start off with two hilarious stories about Stranger Things and a Maria's really weird massage, then we get into book news [9:50]. We have an awesome Harry Potter tidbit for you gamers out there.

Then we get into the meat and potatoes. Be forewarned: there are spoilers past this point! (Can you spoil a non-fiction book? Unclear.) We offer some general thoughts [12:20] before jumping into our very favorite chapters [14:00]. We also tackle a really hard question: how do you talk to people who are antagonistic toward feminism about feminism? We offer our suggestions [45:40], but we'd love to hear yours, too.

And of course, we share your answers to our book club Instagram questions [38:50]!

Keep listening to the end so you don't miss the announcement of December's book pick! We think you're going to be really, really excited about this one.

So plug in those headphones, turn up the volume, and enjoy!

Episode 6 - Jurassic Park (Part 2)

We don't endorse dinosaurs eating children

What's that rumbling sound in the distance? Don't worry...it's just our discussion episode for Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton! We dig into the book. (See what we did there?) We leave no stone unturned--we talk about everything from the characters, to the campiness, to the compeys. And don't worry--we talk about Jurassic Park the movie, too. Oh! And Maria has a pretty strong reaction to Jurassic World that you don't want to miss! Hold onto your butts and be prepared for spoilers!

Pro tip: all the dino talk starts around the 10:00 mark, right after we share the biggest book news of the week.

A huge, brachiosaurus-sized thanks to our vicious, adorable dinosaur roarers who made the ending of this episode the best ever: Ben, Caroline, and Emilie!
